Chapter 34

Wade’s garage was locked and in darkness when they returned. Tracey had a set of keys and let them in. She flicked on the light switch by the door and headed straight to the office. Sara and Edwards could hear her swearing as soon as she opened the door.

‘What the hell has been going on? Did you do this?’

Sara joined her in the door. ‘Not guilty.’

‘Have we been burgled?’

‘I don’t know,’ said Edwards. ‘If you have, Wade didn’t see fit to mention it.’

‘I keep this tidy,’ said Tracey. She climbed over the mess on the floor and began to pile the files back on to her desk.

‘Can you tell if the paperwork for that Ford Focus is here?’ asked Edwards. Tracey shook her head.

‘Not without doing some sorting out first. I would make out a file for a new car until Dan’s made up his mind what to do with it.’

‘In what sense?’

‘To be honest, the best money is in the classic car work, but he makes some second-hand sales. Occasionally, he takes a car in part-ex. If it’s not worth selling on, then it would go to the auction to sell for parts. Rarely, a vehicle is so poor that he’ll strip any parts of value and send it to be cubed.’

‘He told us he had already sold it,’ said Sara.

‘Well, I don’t remember it,’ said Tracey. She stood with sheaves of paper in her hands, looking bewildered.

‘The previous owner was Les Myers,’ said Edwards. ‘He claimed he’d sold it to Mr Wade last week.’

‘Oh well, if it has something to do with Les Myers, that might explain things.’ Tracey sounded sarcastic. She sat on her chair with a sigh. ‘This is going to take ages.’

‘How about we have a cuppa and lend you a hand?’ suggested Edwards. ‘You can tell us about Dan Wade and Les Myers.’

The drinks from the automatic vending machine were pretty disgusting. They were not surprised when Tracey said she normally brought in a flask. Sara helped her sort the paper into piles, while Edwards settled into the spare office chair to check each set of car documents they pulled out.

‘Myers and Wade are friends?’ he asked.

‘I’m not sure,’ said Tracey. She slurped the coffee and shuddered. ‘This is muck, isn’t it? I’ll have to speak to Dan about it.’

‘Les Myers?’

‘They’re mates, I think. Or perhaps you might call them colleagues. I’ve no idea how they met.’

‘Colleagues or friends, you’re not sure?’

‘Sometimes he does some casual work for Dan,’ explained Tracey. ‘Myers is usually skint, so he runs into Norwich to get car parts for whatever job we have on, and Dan gives him a few quid for it. Other times, he just hangs around the garage.’

‘You don’t like him?’ asked Edwards.

‘Not much,’ said Tracey. She was stuffing papers back into storage boxes as she spoke, and now she looked up at Sara. ‘I’m glad if he’s not around when I’m working. Gives me the creeps, to be honest.’

‘Why’s that?’ Sara stopped sorting the papers she held.
